In early February 2005 The Plum Foundation arranged a conference in Copenhagen in order to present "a view from the Middle East" on the dilemmas of democratisation in the area.

The conference brought together a number of independent experts from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Palestine, as well as a few Western scholars who for decades have been doing research, not only in and about the Arab world, but also among Muslims in Europe.

The authors all focus on the challenges and possibilities arising from the latest developments in the region and the world at large.

This anthology reflects the ideas and analyses presented at the conference and the chapters provide a broad and nuanced picture of the dilemmas of democratisation in the Middle East.
